About Us

Established in 1980, Theytus became the first First Nations owned and operated Indigenous publishing house in Canada. Theytus’s root begins within its name, a Salishan word meaning "preserving for the sake of handing down." Selected by its First Nations founder Randy Fred, the name Theytus symbolizes the goal of documenting Indigenous cultures and worldviews through books.

Widely recognized in North America and internationally as the oldest Indigenous publishing house in Canada, Theytus is respected for producing and promoting appropriate reading material and information created by Indigenous authors, illustrators and artists. Theytus strives to ensure that the Indigenous voice and vision is expressed in the highest level of cultural authenticity and integrity. Today, Theytus continues the legacy of being fully owned and operated by Indigenous people and a partner of the En'owkin Centre.
